True but you could turn their local machines into 'thin clients'.
Simple VPN access? What other alternatives should I be looking at? I am at a loss of what the alternatives should be. The original goal of this exercise was to allow users to access their desktops so they would have a familiar experience when working remotely. If I got RD gateway working, I would be forced to use a 3rd party tool to access, and there is only one to date that supports RD Gateway access (iTap). In addition I had so many issues with trying to roll out a 2012 instance that I fell back and at least got 2008 to the certificate issue. RD Gateway requires either an external root authority/cert or importing the self signed cert to a number of clients that have extreme difficulty with performing IT tasks such as installing a cert. Our current 2003 Terminal Server has fewer performance issues.
We have a limited 5MB upstream pipe and performance issues are noticeable. I am running into a few issues with both: I have be co-testing RD Gateway and LogMeIn for remote access services.
